Fiji beach holidays are the most extensive in the South Pacific. Whilst some regions are quite commercialized with large resorts and lots of water activities going on, others are completely undeveloped with just a handful of beach huts, no electricity and no cold water. Whether you're looking for a quiet holiday, a romantic break and family get together or want to met fellow travellers, Fiji has the ideal beach location for you.

Nadi Airport is the starting point for any Fiji journey. Unfortunately there are no white sandy beaches with Nadi Bay having a long stretch of greyish sand with nice views of the mountains and offshore islands but brackish water and no snorkelling reefs. The best beaches on Viti Levu (the main island) start about 30-minutes drive to the south of Nadi and continue along the south coast. This region is known as the Coral Coast and here you'll find about a dozen large resorts, each one in a secluded beach location. The beaches along the Coral Coast vary considerable although none have good snorkelling off the beaches - most resorts here organize short boat trips to the outer reefs where snorkelling is much better. Some beaches, like Natadola, have great swimming and good waves for body surfing. Others, like Korotogo, have a lagoon so shallow that you can walk ankle deep to the outer reef at low tide viewing the coral rock pools along the way. The resorts here are generally good for families and those who like sightseeing and shopping. The further along the coast you travel, the more dense and tropical the countryside becomes. By the time you reach Korolevu, 1 hour and 30 minutes drive from Nadi Airport, the scenery is distinctly tropical with rain forest clad mountains.

The other major concentration of tourism and resorts is in the Mamanuca Islands, directly offshore from Nadi Airport. These island beach resorts here are generally at a premium to the Coral Coast resorts but the swimming lagoons and snorkelling reefs are superior. The largest of the islands are Malolo, Malolo Lailai and Mana which each have two or three resorts along beautiful white sandy beaches. And then there are the tiny coral islands which are surrounded by a white sandy beaches which have a resort to itself. There is a distinct appeal to staying on a tiny coral island, but for those who like exploring and beachcombing, the larger islands offer more freedom. Extending north from the Mamanuca Islands are the exquisite Yasawa Islands, a group of 16 volcanic islands in a long thin chain with sublime beaches, delightful snorkelling lagoons and traditional fishing villages. These islands are more off the beaten track but a well developed budget resort network aimed primarily at backpackers has been established thanks to the fast catamaran that shuttles tourists back and forth each day. Most of the budget resorts are very basic with set meals served at set times and standards of hygiene and service are of poor quality. However, a few of the resorts are a step above the rest with better facilities including ensuite hot water bathrooms and a la carte dining.

Fiji has over 300 islands in all so its not hard to find secluded outer islands with great beach locations. Small boutique resorts can be found scattered around the outer islands alongside such beautiful beach locations but the beach alone is not usually the only selling point. Taveuni, for example, has some of the best scuba diving in the South Pacific as well as being an adventurers paradise with lush tropical forests and an abundance of waterfalls. Similarly, Kadavu in the Southern islands has great diving, surfing and hiking trails. At these resorts, the beach location is secondary to the surrounding environments.
